Why do Americans Work so Much More than Europeans?

Americans now work 50 percent more than do the Germans, French, and Italians. This was not the case in the early 1970s when the Western Europeans worked more than Americans. In this paper, I examine the role of taxes in accounting for the differences in labor supply across time and across countries, in particular, the effect of the marginal tax rate on labor income. The population of countries considered is that of the G-7 countries, which are the major advanced industrial countries. The surprising finding is that this marginal tax rate accounts for the predominance of the differences at points in time and the large change in relative labor supply over time with the exception of the Italian labor supply in the early 1970s. This finding has important implications for policy, in particular for making social security programs solvent.

Do you think circumcising Africans could make them more productive?

First of all: "More"? You have to very carefully define "more". Otherwise your work isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Does "more" mean "longer hours"? Does it mean higher per capita GDP?

Also, "circumcised males"? Do Muslim men work twice as "much" as e.g. Indian men? Do American women work that much less than American men, for that matter? Do American women work about as much as European men and women?

Also also, coincidence does not equate to correlation. Americans genitally mutilate their sons. But they also have but a sorry excuse for a social security system and much less public infrastructure (no public health care etc.) resulting in completely exaggerated insurance premiums etc. They have disproportionately low taxes on the rich and laughable minimum wage. All of those seem to be far more closely related to Americans (not just men, also women!) having to work far longer hours, just to make ends meet -- just so that the American money elite can go from filthy stinking rich to basically owning everything.

Lyle, you are on exactly the right path.

wof explained it well. Just because "Americans" are currently working longer hours + "Americans" (generally) are circumcised the false conclusion was drawn ("ergo: Circumcised males work (more)"). It is fake and hugely flawed logic. This particular brand of logic is currently quite popular with US political parties. It is all BS. You can ignore it; and should Lyle.

This is why this post is, appropriately, in the spam bistro...

correlation does not imply causation. this is a basic tennet of logical reasoning.

So American males have the great misfortune of being genitally mutilated and on top of that are working 50% more. Now that's a point worth noting.

No, it's not. The only thing worth noting is that the OP failed to define "more", and to clarify whether American males do or do not work 50% "more" than American women, which I seriously doubt.

The sexual experience for Americans has been diminished, with diminished sanctity and diminished bonding. The personal life loses some of its sparkle and both men and women are more content to trade life for work and money.

Maybe. Still, do circumcised males in e.g. Arab nations also work 50% more?

Can't speak for the previous poster but the USA is a cultural colony of Europe and therefore comparisons do make (some) sense. You are introducing a completely different group of people.

OP was talking about "circumcised males", not "US American circumcised males". So I am not, in fact, introducing a different group of people. I am legitimately pointing to a group the OP included.
