Dr Isidore Rosenfeld, in his weekly TV spot on Fox News, weighed in this morning giving a strongly pro circumcision message. I only caught part of his comments. We were getting ready to leave the house. What I saw of it he was citing rates of female cancer reduced with circumcised partners.

Did anyone else see this? I searched their website when we got home, without coming up with any results.

This needs a response, but we need to see all of what he said to respond intelligently.

We've got a lot of work to do!

From what I can gather Dr R is jewish.
I don't know about all that, but it WOULD be nice if one of these news outlets found someone WITH a foreskin to comment once in a while.

I'm moving this thread to Calls To Action until we get an actual account of what was said.

No surprise there. From what I can gather Dr R is jewish.

He did make a point that this has nothing to do with religion.

Given his age, there is no doubt that he was medically trained at a time when circ was not questioned.

Ron, thanks for moving this to Calls to Action. Even when we do find out what was said, this needs a response.

Does his segment get repeated?

Same old HIV argument.
UTI argument.

You can tell his ignorance right around the 1:29 mark...
``nor does it interfear with.. or reduce sexual pleasure or activity``

disgusting.

Thanks for the link. At least now I've seen the whole clip. He is clearly misinformed!

How do we respond to this?

He reads studies. We really need someone informed to inform him.

Wow! Just watched the link. He sounds like the old doctors we had in New Zealand during the 1940s-50s. Mostly lies. His name would suggest he is Jewish, is he? Both in Australia and here in New Zealand the mainstream medical profession consider the African studies to be inconclusive and because our rates of HIV infection are so low they have no intention of reintroducing forced non-therapeutic circumcision of minors. A pity one of the interviewers was not intelligent enough to ask him why the incidence of HIV infection is so high in the USA even though circumcision rates are high, and the opposite applies to Europe. I understand your media is very controlled in the USA and this seems to be an example of this.

I feel sorry for you people in America. Your medical professionals are either not very intelligent or, as I suspect, are culturally blind to the ethical and personal harm they do to men, and like the income from the procedure and the subsequent repairs, and sales of lubricants etc.

You could always write a complaint to Fox News about the lack of balance in the item. I and others have done this in New Zealand because we have a Broadcasting Standards Authority and we are able to complain about programs. It may get one more person thinking.

Peterpink -- Interestingly, FOX NEWS often runs counter to the prevailing politics of the country. They make a point about being fair and balanced, however, they carry conservative programming. This guy has a regular show on Fox.

Rosenfeld also writes a regular column for Parade magazine, which is a Sunday paper insert. He presents himself as sorting through all the studies to give everyone the right information. He comes across and authoritative. He probably hasn't read the counterpoint to those studies. Unfortunately, countless people saw this and will be convinced that he is right.

I think that it is going to take the right kind of response to point out that they (Fox News) need to be fair and balanced on this issue, and that Rosenfeld is not right on this. Unfortunately, most people (interviewers) aren't well enough informed to ask the right questions.

The media is only considering the studies that show a possible risk reduction for heterosexual men. The studies for the risk of women who have sex with circumcised men and for men who have sex with men counter the Aftrica trials that favor only circumcised men.

There is a study that showed that women who have sex with circumcised HIV positive men have a greater than 50% increased risk of acquiring HIV. See Circumcision in HIV-infected men and its effect on HIV transmission to female partners in Rakai, Uganda: a randomised controlled trial at http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(09)60998-3/abstract This study has received little press and it proves that male circumcision harms women. We need to be shouting this study from the rooftops to let women know that male circumcision hurts them.

There are other studies that found that circumcision does not have any effect on HIV risk for men having sex with men. See

This sounds like something Georganne Chapin from Intact America should be made aware of, perhaps she could contact Fox.

Agree. I'm going to send an email. I think that it's going to take a response on that level. Statements like these need to be discredited. Also, I don't think that it would hurt to contact Dr Rosenfeld directly to point out the flaws in the studies that he is quoting.
