"He's going to be circumcised, right?"
(from mothering.com/discussions)

I've actually had this question from quite a few people. My precious baby boy is due in March .
I always answered this question seriously and quietly, but I tried something different with a cousin (I was feeling a little "snarky"):
HER: "He's going to be circumcised, right?"
ME: "No, but we are going to remove his big toenail."
After the obscene look of horror, I went on to talk about how toenails are gross, hard to keep clean, and removing it would prevent fungal infections and the potential it would have to be painfully removed in adulthood. Finally, I pointed out that my husband is missing his big toenail and I wanted the baby to "look like daddy."
She stared at me for a while, said "You could have just said NO" and then added.... "I guess you sorta do have a point... I never thought of it that way."
I'm tempted to make this my new standard response.

Nice
That should be her standard response.
I hope that when the time comes for me to have a son, people wont still be asking which parts we will be cutting off.

I really like this response, I've been looking for something like this...this is totally perfect. Especially the people who always talk about it being cleaner and healthier...

I threw together a video of this idea.

very nice !
It would have been great to add the famous anecdotal evidence many parents use to justify circumcision : "I know someone (brother, uncle, father-in-law etc...) who wasn't cut at birth and needed later in life and it was horrible blablabla".

What I'd like to see is everybody conceiving common circ/no-circ dialogs and making cartoons like this and posting them everywhere. It's really quick and I'm sure the results can be a lot better than mine if you spend a few minutes learning the system.

This attitude puts a smile on my face. We really are seeing the increasing amount of people with more open minds thanks to the internet's progression.
"Obscene look of horror"...these people need a reality check. It's depressing how with a little critical critiquing from someone another trusts (like that situation with the cousin) how fast their minds can change. Just imagine all the circumcisions that could have been avoided through some simple statements and thinking that completely tear apart the pro-circ person's views.

Some people take the view that circumcising a boy at birth is as American as apple pie. It's part of American culture. It's part of who we are as a nation. It's part of our tradition. We're so smart and sophisticated in this country that we do this without even questioning why.
Maybe the reason that we have done this for so long without even questioning why is because we're gullible bastards who don't know any better, and even if we did, we wouldn't have balls enough to stand up to some doctor who is going to make a fast buck off the operation, and say, "No!"
The good news is that there are plenty of guys on this site who have balls enough to say, "No!"

I saw this on Despair dot com and they sell demotivational posters. Perhaps they ought to modify it to show a baby being circumcised.

Naw, I think this poster drives the point home just the way it is.
People are blind to circumcision as a "stupid tradition," so replacing it with circumcision is only going to get you "anti-Semite" reactions.
That circumcision is an incredibly stupid tradition is not as immediately obvious as the Pamplona bull run.

Lewis Black on the bull run...
In a calm voice "I was in Pamplona, and I had an opportunity to do the bull run, but I didn't. You know why?"
Angry, yelling voice with his fingers jabbing... "Because I'm not fucking stupid!"

People claim that amputating a little boy's foreskin is no different from cutting off the umbilical cord, or vaccinating the child against a disease. Yet I can guarantee that these are the same people who would scream bloody murder if a doctor were to do so much as lay a medical instrument on a little girl's foreskin.

"He's going to be circumcised, right?"
"Circumcised? That's the word they use for foreskin amputation, isn't it? Is that what you're asking me, whether or not I intend having his amputated?"
(Dodge mode) "It's called circumcision..."
"But it does mean amputation of the baby's foreskin, doesn't it? Or does it?"
"Yes...I suppose so."
"What do you mean you suppose so? Does it, or doesn't it?"
"There's no need for an interrogation..."
"No, and there's no need for me to answer your surgery question is there? You know the answer, don't you...."
"Yes...."
