I am watching Colbert Report with my labtop next to me and I just saw a pretty disturbing segment.

Steven is commenting on the Isreal/Gaza conflict and all of a sudden he says something along the lines of:

Welcome to the Isreal conflict center, where debate is never cut off, it's circumcized!

Crowd: Wooooooo!!!!! Claps cheers and hollars, some laughs.

Now let's run that same segment, only saying what it should say.

Welcome to the Isreal conflict center, where debate is never cut off, it's strapped down to a table and brutally mutilated against its will!

Crowd: ......what?

If only people could see the truth *sigh

Still a funny show besides that LOL :D

Christopher Hitchens said it well.

"Genital Mutilation is No, Joke."

I mean, sure. Hah-hah.

Mean while 3,000 boys are mutilated in this country a day. Yay. Everyone cheer on.

What exactly was the joke?

He managed to sneak in one of America's dirty little secret in an open joke and made light of it.

He said circumcision instead of "circumspect" or some other verb that means to look the other way.

Was it really that funny?

No, I think Colbert was consciously wanting to toot cut guys' horns, pardon the expression.

I wasn't impressed.

We shouldn't encourage this blatant sexism. What if the joke would have been about Sudan and infibulation? Would people be laughing then?

What a shameless plug for circumcision that was.

I thought Colbert was alright, though I never really watched him.

After this, I think I'm quite through with him.

I'm bigger fan of Jon Stewart... If I'm not mistaken, Stewart is Jewish... I really hope he doesn't decide to think it's cute to make fun of infant genital mutilation... I really would consider to stop watching his show...

Both Stewart and Colbert will do circ jokes or FGM jokes. Stewart most definitely feels victimized by his Jewish upbringing.

At least with Colbert you can take solace in the fact that he's playing a character that he Himself doesn't agree with.

I don't miss a minute of either show.

For anyone who views The Colbert Report on a regular basis, it's kind of hard to miss the satire in pretty much everything he says. I missed this one, so I'll have to catch the rerun, but I can just imagine Colbert's sarcastic tone of voice when he delivered that line. When he makes fun of something, the audience cheers, so that's no surprise. Gotta read between the lines to understand that show - to me it's obvious, but maybe not to someone who doesn't watch it often.

Uncomfortable subject matter that's generally considered taboo in public conversation is usually brought up in the form of jokes. With this joke we're discussing here, at least it seems to be mocking the issue in question. To me that invites a more critical view of the subject.

I don't see it as a bad thing.

Well I remember hearing one segment form The Daily Show you may or may not have seen.

Stewart: So whats it like to see your empire fall?
Oliver: Its a bit like being circumcised.
Stewart: Not that bad.
Oliver: If you're 90% foreskin.

Kinda off topic but that reminds me of TMZ joking about Sandra Bullock's son being cut. I knew they were assholes already, but I seriously wanted to call up and complain about that.
