View Full Version : Random coincidence (prophylactic argument)

Recently I had approached my mother about my circumcision and one of the excuses that ended up coming up was that she perceived the risks of keeping my body intact (cancer mainly) as being great enough to have it done as a prophylactic measure.

In the heat of the moment, I countered by asking what her actions would be if it were suggested that prophylactic breast removal would prevent breast cancer.

Incidentally, I have just heard on the radio that that may not be far from reality

Random coincidence, not sure how I feel about prophylactic mastectomy, just found it really really odd that it actually exists now.

Male breast cancer is more common than penile cancer. Penile cancer in circumcised men can occur on the circumcision scar.

In developed countries there is no difference in penile cancer rates between circumcised & intact men. In either matter, penile cancer is very rare, about the same risk as getting hit by lightening or shark attack. Smoking is the highest risk factor for penile cancer. The penile cancer boogeyman is one of the things the pro-circumcisers like to scare the herd with.

I believe the suggestion of prophylactic mastectomy applies only to women carrying one of the two genes which predisposed these particular individuals to breast cancer. As far as I know, penile cancer is so rare that there has not been any type of research aimed at the detection of a specific, responsible gene.
