Going back to the intersex issue: genuine hermaphrodites (with two sets of genitals) seem to be quite rare, but what I've seen more commonly to be problematic is narrow ranges of "acceptable" genital shapes and sizes. Like you say in one of your examples, an otherwise female individual who also happened to gestate with a penis. Does no harm, in fact I'd say it was the reverse - I wonder if males felt threatened by it though...
