She knew what she had and thought it was great that she was unique and had the best of both worlds. Another one had no vaginal opening but got great pleasure when the area became wet. The "reconstructive" surgery left her with a big, painful open sore and no feeling. Like circumcision, these surgeries are done for the parent's hang ups and the child's healthy sexual functioning is an afterthought

I get so angry that modern medicine can so many great advances, but when it comes to sex organs and sexuality, modern medicine is still caught in the mid-nineteeth century. Why does the Hippocratic oath not apply to sex organs, especially in the USA?
The hippocratic oath seems to be ignored in a lot of cases. Mention cancer, and suddenly its fine to lop off nearly anything and everything, whether it is affected or not. This is pre-Victorian practice, for ****s sake.

Going back to the intersex issue: genuine hermaphrodites (with two sets of genitals) seem to be quite rare, but what I've seen more commonly to be problematic is narrow ranges of "acceptable" genital shapes and sizes. Like you say in one of your examples, an otherwise female individual who also happened to gestate with a penis. Does no harm, in fact I'd say it was the reverse - I wonder if males felt threatened by it though...
