Default Detroit event near Wayne State Univ campus - NOCIRC booth volunteers needed Sept 2012

We NEED volunteers for the NOCIRC booth at the "Dally in the Alley" event to be held near the Wayne State University campus in Detroit on the Saturday after Labor Day, September 8, 2012.

The event officially runs from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. The NOCIRC booth will be in operation between 11 a.m. and about 5 p.m. We will need helpers for booth setup before 11 a.m., and for booth dismantling and pack up around 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., the "Dally in the Alley" becomes mostly a performing musical artist's event.

The "Dally in the Alley" event began as as a street art fair in 1977, and evolved into a music and food-sampling festival always held on the Saturday after Labor Day when end-of-summer fair weather prevails. The event took on the present name and location in 1982. "Dally in the Alley" comes from the title of a medieval drinking song. The event has grown to include 4 separate sound stages, and a kid's section. The music festival is considered by some to be among the best in the Midwest. Competition has become keen among performing artists for available stage times.

The "Alley" is located on city blocks nestled between some of Wayne State University's most prominent landmarks. The city blocks (bounded by Hancock, 2nd, Forest, and Anthony Wayne Drive) are across the street from the Physics Building, kitty-corner to Old Main's block, and are one block behind the renowned Hilberry Theater.

Norm Cohen, Director of NOCIRC of Michigan, is currently setting up the booth volunteer schedule. We love good street debaters, but pleeease don't feel that you have to be expert in all intactivist issues to participate. If you have no experience, you will be paired with someone who does. It's mostly just handing out pamphlets.

Extra people during booth set up, and again, during booth dismantling around 4 to 5 p.m. During these mad scrambles, we need people who can carry things, and tend piles of NOCIRC paraphernalia while others run for the delivery vehicle. We need people who can hold tent poles and tie-downs. It takes a minimum of four people to gracefully install/uninstall the booth roof. One heavy-set intactivist is great for loading a couple of heavy trunks into the delivery vehicle, but two medium-sized intactivists can accomplish the same, although a bit more awkwardly.

Come see how exhilarating it is to work together with people who do not cut others.

Come see what's happening in Detroit's reviving and thriving Midtown section.
(Progressive intactivism will be what's happening there too!)

When I wrote that competition is keen among performing artists for available stage times, I didn't know exactly HOW keen it really is. "The South End," Wayne State's campus newspaper, reported that in 2011 event organizers had to select 41 performing artist acts from a pool of 180 applicants.

Wayne State is a perfect venue for promoting intactivism and turning heads around.

Wayne State people have a proud history of social activism and calls for social justice. Much of it whirled around the union movements. Later, much of it whirled around equal educational opportunity issues. We now need to get it whirling around the genital integrity issue.

The circ rate in Michigan remains high (85% to 87%), mostly because the "Generous Motors" health plans still pay for it. Michigan Medicaid also still pays for it.

It's only a natter of time here. The stage is set for an about face. Education at the grassroots level will eventually get the one of the third party payers in Michigan to change its policies. It will be interesting to see which pillar of the third party payer turns around first. When this happens, it will make a big difference in Michigan.

This event occurs in less than 24 hours - on Saturday, September 8, 2012.

We can still use helpers at the time of booth assembly at 10 am to 11 am.
The event officially starts at 11 am.

We can also still use helpers at the time of booth disassembly at 4 pm to 5 pm.
The event becomes mostly a music-fest thereafter, from 5 pm until official closing at 11 pm.

It takes 4 people to hold each tent pole and install or uninstall the cabana-like roof of the booth gracefully.

Michigan intactivists still have a heady feeling after the great success of the "Michigan March for Integrity" street protest that was held last Saturday, September 1, 2012. We hope to make a good showing with the NOCIRC booth at this "Dally in the Alley" event too.

Norm Cohen, the Director (and Prime-Mover) of NOCIRC of Michigan, is the gent in the left foreground of this photo of the street protest. He is the one wearing a red baseball cap, red shirt, and red shorts, and he is has a black case slung over his shoulder.

Photos of the booth setup we use can be found at this post:

If you are at the event, please do your part to promote intactivism in Michigan, and report for tent-pole duty.
