Quote:
A patient's penis has been cut and bloodied by a defective urinal bottle, prompting the medical devices regulator to call on all hospitals to check their supplies are free of sharp edges.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on Tuesday directed hospitals, health professionals, carers and patients themselves to check all male urinal bottles were "free of sharp edges both inside and outside the bottle".
"Sharp edges are a defect and if such defects are noticed the manufacturer or supplier should be contacted," the TGA said in a statement.
The safety advice was issued after a patient received "lacerations caused by a sharp edge on the inner aspect of a urinal bottle neck".
The man had noticed blood on his penis after using the bottle and subsequently discovered the cuts.
